Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer online training?

Yes!

Online options are available for all but our Self-Defense training, due to the nature of the course.

If you are interested in a train-the-trainer course in Bystander Intervention or De-Escalation, we strongly suggest you hold the training in person for more detailed, timely feedback.

Do you provide in-person training outside of Seattle?

Yes!

We provide in-person trainings throughout Washington State and beyond.

For most locations outside King County (or more than 25 miles from Seattle), we charge a $100/day travel fee to cover mileage, time, and transportation costs. If the training requires an overnight stay, lodging may be invoiced at cost. This will always be confirmed prior to contracting.

All PCEI trainings except for Self-Defense can also be offered online, making them accessible to groups anywhere in the U.S.

If you're not sure how your location fits into the travel policy, just ask; we’ll help you figure out the most affordable option, such as combining multiple trainings or a custom train-the-trainer, so you get the most out of our time together.

What is "Bystander Intervention", "De-Escalation" and "Self-Defense?" How are they different?

Great questions!

  • Bystander Intervention → How to help someone else safely
  • De-Escalation → How to prevent or calm a situation before it becomes dangerous

  • Self-Defense → How to protect yourself if danger cannot be avoided

All three trainings complement each other — together creating safer communities, more confident individuals, and a shared understanding of how to intervene or protect yourself without causing additional harm.

Bystander Intervention

Bystander Intervention teaches how to safely step in, support someone, or interrupt harm when you witness harassment, conflict, or dangerous behavior.
It focuses on practical, real-world strategies anyone can use — without escalating the situation or putting themselves at risk.

Key skill areas:

  • Recognizing harm

  • Choosing the safest intervention method

  • Supporting the targeted person

  • Reducing risk for everyone involved

De-Escalation

De-Escalation training focuses on preventing conflict from becoming a crisis by using communication, boundary-setting, and emotional regulation techniques.
It is about calming tense situations, reducing the likelihood of violence, and creating safer outcomes for all parties.

Key skill areas:

  • Nonviolent communication

  • Grounding and regulation skills

  • Reading cues and warning signs

  • Setting clear, safe boundaries

Self-Defense

Self-Defense training teaches physical and non-physical techniques to protect yourself when facing an immediate threat.
Unlike Bystander Intervention or De-Escalation, self-defense is used when other options are not available and personal safety is at risk.

Key skill areas:

  • Situational awareness

  • Evasion and escape

  • Simple, effective defensive techniques

  • When and how to use physical force safely and legally

Can we combine courses?

Yes! You can absolutely combine any of the Community Safety trainings — Bystander Intervention, De-Escalation, and Self-Defense — into a single extended workshop.

Combined trainings are offered as a 2-hour session and are priced at 1.5x the regular rate, since they require additional material, preparation, and facilitation time. We've placed the cost breakdown below!

If you’re not sure which combination is best for your group, we're happy to help you design the right fit for your goals and comfort level.

  • Community Rate: Free – $75 → Combined: Free – $112

  • Standard Rate: $100–$200 → Combined: $150–$300

  • Solidarity Rate: $225–$450 → Combined: $340–$675

What's the format of your Community Safety trainings?

Whether you're looking for Bystander Intervention, De-Escalation, or Self-Defense training, you will get hands-on, personalized instruction that will stick with you for years to come!

All three courses are taught with a mixture of presentation/lecture, Q&A, and interactive conversation and movement.

While Bystander Intervention and De-Escalation can both be taught online for groups big and small, due to the nature of the course our Self-Defense training needs to be taught in-person. This class requires space to move around safely.

Do you offer a Train-the-Trainer option?

Yes! PCEI offers a Train-the-Trainer program for organizations that want to build internal capacity and empower their own staff or volunteers to deliver Bystander Intervention or De-Escalation trainings (or a combination of the two!).

The Train-the-Trainer option includes:

  • A full-length training on the chosen topic

  • A trainer’s toolkit with slides, scripts, guidelines, and facilitator notes

  • A one-time “tune-up” session (online or in-person) within the 30 days of the training where we answer questions, provide coaching, and help your new trainers address real-world scenarios that have come up

  • Continued email support for 90 days

Because this program enables your team to deliver the training on an ongoing basis, it is priced higher than a standard workshop.

I'm just one person. How do I sign up for training?

You’ve got options!

Option 1: Join a scheduled training
Check out the Events page for upcoming sessions you can register for as an individual. Most community safety trainings are offered multiple times throughout the year.
Don’t see one that fits? New sessions are added regularly — check back soon!

Option 2: Gather a small group
If you can bring together a group of three or more people (you + two friends, neighbors, coworkers, PTA members, etc.), I’ll work with you to schedule a private session at a time that works for your group.
This is often the most affordable option, as costs can be split amongst your group.

Option 3: Book a 1:1 training session
If you prefer a private, personalized training, I offer 1:1 sessions at a higher rate to account for the customized format and preparation.
Contact me for pricing and details.

I want to help! How can I help?

We love you, too. 💕

I have an idea for a training!

Great! The world needs more people to step up as they are able to, so we appreciate you asking.

The list of needs will change as we hear from community members, but we are currently looking for the following training opportunities to offer:

  • Food preservation (canning, drying, etc.)
  • Wilderness survival
  • Street medic

If you'd like to join PCE Institute as a contracted provider - for one of these proposed trainings, or another - let us know!
